SUSTAINABILITY

AJI adopts slow fashion - a movement advocating for a holistic manufacturing process in respect to people, environment, animals, and artisans. In its very essence, it is an eco-conscious approach to fashion.

When AJI was founded in 2022, our sustainability aim was to reduce fabric waste and create high quality garments. We sourced fabrics from local merchants in Bangalore and created high quality stitched garments that are long lasting. Over time, we reflected on our sustainability practice and made changes for the better.

“Cultural sustainability helps to amplify and pass cultural knowledge and practices to future generations by honoring the people and work before us”

~ Niha Elety

In 2024, AJI took a new direction and rebranded. We now focus on creating handmade traditional Aipan embroidery on naturally dyed Khadi Cotton fabric. This time, we have partnered with an organization that works with close to 300+ weavers in Rural Bengal, India, to produce ethical and handwoven textiles using indigenous weaves and Bengal techniques of weaving. The handwoven Khadi cotton has been dyed using natural and AZO-free dyes. These dyes are non-toxic and environmentally safe.

Khadi Cotton is a handwoven natural fabric. It is soft on the skin and adapts to the climate you are in. During hot days, the fabric gives a very breathable and light feel and during colder days, it keeps you warm.

Aipan is an almost 1000 years old dying religious folk art native to the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India. Reclaim fashion inspired by Aipan folk art and join us in this new chapter of cultural sustainability.
